Hampshire has ranked fourth or better in health rankings of the 50 U.S. states for the past
fifteen years (holding the top spot for seven of those), according to the United Health Foundation. Maine also has done well; it has ranked in the top ten since 2000.
The
Memorial Hospital in North Conway is a Critical Access Hospital offering acute
care, emergency services, cardiac rehabilitation, oncology, ambulatory surgery
center, birthing center, radiology services and more. The Merriman House is the
hospital's 45-bed nursing home which also offers an adult day program and a specialty
in memory loss disorders. Area residents are also served by Huggins
Hospital in Wolfeboro, and Lakes
Region Hospital in Laconia. Bridgton
Hospital and Central
Maine Medical serve many of the residents in Western Maine.
Crime
Both New Hampshire and Maine enjoy low rates of crime.
"For [2000] the State of New Hampshire had a total Crime Index of 2,433.1
reported incidents per 100,000 people." This ranked New Hampshire as having
the 3rd lowest total Crime Index. "For that year the State of Maine
had a total Crime Index of 2,619.8 reported incidents per 100,000 people."
This ranked Maine as having the 5th lowest total Crime Index.
